Rainy Monday, pianos and somersaults

27 April, 2009

Pee-aneena = piano

The weather is on the gloomy side today. Not as cold as it was yesterday but inside weather. We were surprised when someone other Zema showed up this morning. It was Janette and Kuralt’s daughter. She was our translator for the day. She is a very nice young lady who speaks very good English. She said she is spending 4 months in Virginia Beach this summer on an exchange program. We told her to watch out for the young American boys. They will definitely be chasing after her.

I don’t think Anton was sure what to make of someone else coming to get him this morning. He got very shy whenever she was in the room. The first task of the day was to dump out the bag. I think he was looking for his snack. We hid the camera bag up on the other piano hoping to keep him at bay until later in our visit. He then decided it was time for a piano recital.

While papa entertained him mama went to change her camera battery. The little sneak saw me and figured out where his snacks were. Next thing we knew he was climbing up on the chair and onto the piano to get in the bag. After eating his tangerine and having a drink he got quiet and somewhat withdrawn. Then the telltale sign of pulling at his pants. It was off to the toilet. Sure enough he needed to go potty. He came back to the music room in a hurry and was ready to play.

Papa had blown up the ball while we were gone. Anton decided he wanted to play catch with the bear on top of the bookcase. He couldn’t quite get the ball up high enough so Mama gave him a boost. I would put him down to get the ball and he would look up at me and give me a look to say pick me up. He thought it was great fun to have Mama turn him upside down to get the ball. We then discovered that he knows how to do somersaults. He just kept rolling over and over. Mama tried but wasn’t so graceful. He thought that was pretty funny.

After a while he decided he wanted the rest of his snack and trucked back over to the piano to retrieve it.

Today we also learned how to take the batteries out of the ipod speakers and to punch holes in the paper with the scissors. He is definitely a quick study.

Not sure what the afternoon holds in store since the weather isn’t the greatest. Here is a snapshot of our visit with Anton today. We have some video of him playing the piano that we will share when we get home.

Just some side notes on Taraz- they don’t appear to have lawnmowers of any kind. Everyone seems to cut the grass and weeds with a scythe and then rake it up and dispose of it. By the time they finish all the play area at Umit it will be time to start over at the beginning. They are making slow progress of clearing the playground. I’m amazed at how quickly they get it done.

Most people here seem to have leather coats or jackets. Even when it is in the 70’s everyone seems to wear coats and sweaters. They must have the same type of internal thermostat as Kara L. back home. The rest of the clothing is almost like being back in the 80’s or early 90’s, a lot of synthetic clothes and synthetic track suits (adidas, reebok, etc). The little kids wear more bright colors than the adults. Adults seem to either wear shades of black and grey or really way out patterns/colors. It’s mostly the young adults who wear jeans on occasion. The women seem to like the high stiletto heels (Jessica H would fit right in) with pants or dresses/skirts. I’ve also seen a couple of women wearing fishnet hose. Unlike the states and Europe, women seem to all wear pantyhose with their dresses. It will be interesting to see if that is still the case in the summer.

I guess that’s all for now.

Paka,
Lynda and Wayne
