Vacation in Virginia Beach...Day 1 Beach

Vacation time has arrived. We made plans to go to Virginia Beach with the Whitfield and Simmons families. Lukas couldn't wait to spend the week with Aunt Becca, Uncle Rob, Aunt Ro, Skyler, Ben, Kira and Sean. They have been renting a house at the beach for several years and invited us to join them.

We headed across the Chesapeake Bay to the family farm Friday evening to drop Gracie off before heading on to Virginia Beach late Saturday morning. Lukas was quite excited for the trip to the beach. He thought the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel was AWESOME. Everytime we came to a tunnel he would say,"we're going under the water, right?" The drive down Rte 13 was no problem and Lukas kept himself occupied by watching his DVDs. We took a short break for lunch. It only took us a about 4 hours from Easton. We arrived mid -afternoon and got settled in while we waited for the rest of the troops to start arriving.

Next to arrive was Aunt Becca and Uncle Rob with Ben, Kira and Sean. We were staying in the garage apartment out back and everyone else was staying in the main house. Lukas made a beeline to the main house when they arrived. While he was occupied I headed to the store to stock up on groceries for the week.

When I got back Aunt Becca and the kids were all just getting back from a trip to the beach. We all had a great spaghetti dinner together and got caught up before calling it a night. Aunt Ro and her family would be arriving late so we would see them Sunday morning.

Lukas kept himself busy Sunday morning until I would let him go next door by watching DVDs. Not so unusual, however, where he chose to do it was a little different.

HAS ANYONE SEEN LUKAS?

We had great weather on Sunday. Once I deemed it to be a reasonable time of the morning we got ready for a day at the beach and headed next door to see who was going to join us. We headed out with Aunt Ro to stake out a spot and the rest straggled down a little behind us. We were very fortunate that the rental was just a few houses from the beach.

LUKAS AND SEAN

The water here was a lot different than what Lukas played in when we went to the gulf coast of Florida. Fortunately he had a good respect for the waves and stayed close to the shore. We did take a life vest that he wore off and on when the water was rough and we would take him out beyond the breakers. He referred to it as the deep end and said he wanted to stay in the "short end" which is what he calls the shallow water. The current was really strong today and about every 5 minutes we would make the kids get out and walk back up the beach beyond our spot. It carried you several blocks in a short amount of time.

PLAYING IN THE SURF

He took quite a few hits from waves crashing on him but would come up laughing and go right back. We took turns watching him and going in the water with him due to the rough water. I was with him and judged the break of a wave wrong and it broke right on our heads. He slipped out of my hand and when I came up I was a little concerned because I didn't see him right away. I breathed a sigh of relief when he finally came up from under the surf. He looked a little shaken but thankfully was ok.

We stayed not to far from a Navy Air Station so this was a familiar sight all week, Navy jets...

and we even saw the occassional battle ship...

Late morning daddy decided to head down towards the boardwalk (13 blocks) to buy a beach umbrella and some chairs. He was gone for quite a while. Everyone else had headed back to get some lunch while Lukas and I waited at the beach. Did I say it was very hot and sunny. Daddy came back via the ocean front road and was headed down the sand when I finally saw him. He was beat from lugging the large umbrella, two chairs and an anchor for the umbrella. He had carried all of it for probably abut 20 blocks. Not an easy feat. Thanks daddy! The chairs and umbrella were a welcomed respite from the heat on the beach. While he and Lukas cooled off in the ocean I went back and packed up a lunch for everyone. When I got back Lukas had just dosed off.

A VERY TIRED LUKAS ATTEMPTING TO EAT HIS SANDWICH...he kept falling asleep but did manage to finish it before taking a good nap.

The group decided for dinner we would go out to eat. So we headed to Chix Seafood towards the end of the boardwalk. Lukas of course wanted to sit with the big boys. His new best friend is Aunt Ro's 17 yr old son, Skyler. They have a great deal in common even though they are 12 yrs apart in age. Aunt Ro kept commenting on how much Lukas reminded her of Skyler at that age.

Lukas was happy to see that he and Skyler both like Spongebob. Skyler made use of Lukas' Spongebob sticker book while we waited for our dinner. There was a Celtic Rock Band playing out on the boardwalk patio of Chix. Lukas kept asking to go out and see the "rockstars" so after dinner Skyler was kind enough to take him outside. Another of their common interests is music. Skyler plays guitar in band. They were gone for at least 30-45 minutes. They finally came back in and Lukas was carrying a set of very beat up drum sticks. He very excitedly told us,"the rock star gave them to me!" Skyler explained that Lukas had danced in front of the band the entire time and the band was quite taken with him. We went out to thank them and discovered Lukas was evidently thier number 1 fan that night and they made a big deal out saying goodbye to him as we left. Of course we heard the drumsticks all the way home and for a while before getting him to go to bed. Thanks Mr. Drummer!
