It was on this day last year that Wayne and I headed to Dulles Airport to board a Lufthansa flight to Frankfurt on the first part of our journey to Lukas. We had no real idea or clue of what was awaiting us on the other end. Bear with me over the next few weeks as I stroll down memory lane during the 1st anniversary of our meeting for the first time and becoming a family.
It is hard to believe that a year has already gone by. It seemed to take FOREVER just to get to the point where we were actually going to travel to FINALLY meet our little boy we had waited so long for. All we had was a photo, a name and birthdate of a possible match to cling to as we blindly traveled half way around the world to see, hopefully this child, and other children they had selected for us to meet.
My how things had changed from where we began this journey. Our initial plan was to adopt 1-2 children, preferably a girl, from infant to 2 yrs of age from Guatemala. As they say, things change rapidly in the adoption world. We were warned away from Gautemala and they closed shortly after we signed our application with our home study agency. We started looking into Vietnam because we figured most people were headed to China. Then China changed their requirements and things slowed way down so we abandoned Vietnam figuring that was where everyone else would be headed. They also closed down during our process. So we end up with Kazakhstan on a whim. God really knows how to get you where he wants you if you aren't listening close enough. We then decided to increase our chances of traveling sooner by changing our preference to include both genders and broaden our age range to 5 with the hope of staying at 3 and under.
Where did we end up, with a precious little boy age 3 1/2 from Kazakhstan. So go the many twists and turns of the road to a family through adoption!
I have been thinking about our travels a year ago a lot lately. It is amazing how our families have changed in just a year! Last year at this time I was excited, nervous, and dissapointed at having another delay. Then we got the call 2 days later and I was reading your blog for any information you gave on the trip to Taraz and what to be prepared for! Happy "Start of the Adventure" Day!
ReplyDeleteThanks Kara. We are glad we had you and Quentin with us during the process in Taraz.
