What can you see...

Lukas had his first eye exam this afternoon. It was quite interesting to watch the doctor do an eye exam on a 4 year old. We had to play "red light, green light" to get him to hold still while she took the photo of his eyes. All he could do was talk about the balloon he saw in her "camera". So we would say "red light" when we wanted him to freeze and hold still.

She used pictures instead of letters for the vision sight test. He was more interested in pushing the buttons on the pad that changed the images and didn't want to answer what was on the screen. She then promised him he could play with it if he answered her questions. She said he is a slight bit far-sighted but that is common for kids his age and she expects him to grow out of it as the lens of his eye lenghtens more as he grows.

He was not fond of the eye drops! I had to hold his arms and legs still while she tilted his head back and put the drops in. He and I then went and played in the lobby with some toys. After a while we were looking at a book and he kept saying,"can't see mama." I figured the drops had done their job by then and his eyes were dilated.

He got real excited when we went back and she pulled out her head light to check his eyes. She called it her miner's cap and Lukas wanted to wear it. She was very good with him and let him play with a lot of her tools of the trade. He thought they were lots of fun.

Her assessment was that his eyes are fine and functioning the way they should. She will see us again in 2 years unless something changes. Dr. Shari and the office manager were both quite taken with Lukas. What can I say, he's a charmer with the ladies.

  1. We haven't had a proper eye exam for Nicholas yet. Nicholas is a charmer too!
