We all got up bright and early this morning and headed to the Surgical Center for a 6:45am appointment. Fortunately Lukas isn't big on eating until he has been up for a while so we didn't have any problems being NPO for the procedure. We got checked in and while we were waiting to go back another family with a little boy came in. Lukas played with him until it was time to go back. They finally called us back to pre-op and gave us a locker for our things. Naturally, Lukas had to be the keeper of the key. They checked his vitals and gave him some cool pjs with lions on them. Needless to say, while we waited Lukas was in and out of the locker multiple times. The anesthesiologist and ENT both chatted with us briefly and then they came to take us back to the OR. It didn't take longer for Lukas to go under. He was a real trooper with the mask. We were told all kids fight a little when first going under and we were asked to hold his hands and legs still. I think he was out in about 10seconds. We kissed him goodbye and headed to the waiting room.
About 30 minutes later the ENT came out and gave us a report. He said the fluid was very thick and gooey, he put the tubes in and also ended up removing his adenoids. In spite of not really having any signs of enlarged adenoids it ended up that they were quite enlarged and were the reason for the persistent fluid behind his ear drum. They were pinching of the Eustachian tubes so the fluid couldn't drain. A few minutes later they called us to come back to the recovery area. Lukas was sitting up and was cranky. We were told to expect this. We were also told he would be sleepy later and want to take a nap...that never happened! Since they had to take his adenoids out they put an iv in after he was out. They got him up and he sat in daddy's lap in a chair for a while. It was quite sweet to see him snuggled up with daddy and holding the humidified air hose against his little face. After a while he then decided he wanted to sit with mommy, so we switched places which was quite the process with him hooked up to the iv, ekg monitor and pulse oximeter. About the only thing he complained about was that his mouth and throat were dry. Once he started coming around he wanted all the wires and lines off.
They decided he was good to go and came over to take out the iv and disconnect the monitors. Each time the nurse removed an electrode from his chest he said, "thank you". We got him dressed and were headed out when he turned around to walk the other way. We said where are you going? He replied he was going to say goodbye to the little boy from the waiting room. How sweet is that! They let him take the facemask and humidifier tube home with him.
Since he was such a good boy I promised him he could have whatever he wanted to eat or drink for the whole day. On the way home we had to stop by the pharmacy to get his antibiotic. He was not happy that he had to leave the locker key behind and his leapster needed new batteries. So mommy found an cheap lock with keys, some batteries, and a chocolate treat. I think he was more excited about the keys than the chocolate.

I did say he could have whatever he wanted. He laid there watching cartoons while we got packed to go to grandma and grandpa tractors for the weekend.
He napped on and off on the way to the eastern shore but never really slept as the anesthesiologist had promised. When we got to my parent's farm we discovered that they were watching his cousin Abby (almost 2) because she was home from daycare with an ear infection. We had to keep their medicine separate because they were on the same thing. The two of them are quite the pair together. Abby follows Lukas around and tries to do everything he does. They were running up and down the halls, jumping on the beds and sofas and wrestling. Neither one of them took and afternoon nap.
